Caring is an action inherent to the nursing profession. By considering its importance, this work centered on composing the meaning of the care concept for nurses working in oncology. The theoretical framework adopted was according to the Representational Meaning Theory as proposed by Ogden e Richards (1923). The sample consisted of 11 nurses registered in a Specialization Course in Oncology offered by the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing. Results showed that with regard to the meaning in the Symbol, 50% of the sample referred to care as giving attention or being concerned about the client. As to the meaning in the Referent, 42.86% of the answers reported care as a human characteristic and 53.33% still characterized care within the physical dimension. Finally, with respect to the meaning in the Thought, 36.37% of the sample centered on care in relation to the dimension of perceiving positive feelings from those who are cared for. It was considered in this study that the nurse idealizes a type of care which is essential to our practice, as shown by the responses, providing everything a person needs and establishing a balance for instance; however, current work conditions are not suitable for such situations.

Keywords : nursing communication; care; oncology.
