This study reflects on nursing teaching and student motivation for the teaching-learning process. It aimed to understand the meanings attributed to teacher-student communication in nursing teaching and was developed as a transversal field study of teacher-student classroom interaction. Study results revealed facilitating aspects such as class dynamics, good teacher-student communication and relevant contents, as well as complicating aspects, including short time available for the subject, some students’ inhibition and lack of interest in the issue. The study subjects also presented proposals for changes in classroom relations they judged necessary, which were: diversified/innovative teaching methods, knowing how to listen, dialogue and good use of time. These considerations also make us reflect about the undergraduate nursing curricula and how stuck we are to curricular plans, without reconsidering or organizing our time so as to be really productive, as well as the importance of recognizing and respecting individual differences in the classroom, since they stimulate knowledge construction.
