Breastfeeding supports the mother/baby relationship through epidemic contact, exchange of touches and glances. The ten steps of the Child Friend Hospital Initiative (IHAC) seek to achieve successful breastfeeding. The rules of the Brazilian Ministry of Health state that all newborns should be placed close to its mother to suckle during the first half hour of life, as long as both are in good conditions. This research aims to describe health professionals' view on the first suckling session in the Delivery Room at the Botucatu Medical School Hospital das Clínicas. 13 interviews were recorded with team members, which were grouped according to elements or aspects with common characteristics. Most of the interviewees were women (84.6%) and 69.2% had a higher education degree. 69.2% knew about the ten IHAC steps, 77% of whom had witnessed breastfeeding in the delivery room, telling about the establishment of mother/baby links and affection and stimulating breastfeeding. Indicated difficulties refer to delivery type, team and binomial conditions. We noticed through the interviews that the institution is starting this process, which requires changes in routine, standards and professional training.
