Verbal communication is considered a fragile point when working with patients in serious cases. This communication with a newborn pediatric patient (RN) in a serious situation becomes even more delicate, because this RN is usually premature and needs special care. This situation creates feelings of anguish and various family conflicts. This descriptive and exploratory study seeks to understand the perception of family members and visitors to newborns at intensive and semi-intensive care units of the verbal communication between them and doctors and nursing staff. Interviews were held during hospital visits, 16 of which were used in the study. In general, both doctors and nurses have preoccupied themselves and given importance to verbal communication, although greater demands are placed on nursing staff, which is always nearer to the visitors. What information is concerned, that about the "family contributions to treatment" is most emphasized by professionals. In the studied sectors, the verbal communication process between staff and clients needs to be organized, always respecting the competencies of each and the peculiarities/context of each family’s life

Keywords : verbal communication; neonatology; intensive care.
