Changes brought about by the psychiatric reform movement, including its spaces, point towards humanization. These aspects create impact and can influence the life of who works in the area. This made us realize a descriptive - exploratory study with a view to evaluating the influence and use of physical space at the units of nurses working at the Integrated Mental Health Center (CAISM) in SP. Data were collected in the second semester/2000 and instruments were used for obtaining data about physical space and about the nurses, with respect to the perception and use of physical space at the units they act in. Results allow us to assure that the physical structure of this institution possesses innovative characteristics for traditional psychiatry, keeping doors open, without bars and locks, promoting individuality through rooms with few beds and private bathrooms, facilitating interactions by means of common spaces, among others. The nurses who participated in the study see these characteristics as unusual and most of them indicate a positive influence of environmental organization on their care, on their relationships with other team members and on their personal and professional quality of life.

Keywords : psychiatric nursing; non-verbal communication; physical space.
