This study aimed to understand how communication is perceived by the users of an outpatient unit at a Psychiatric Institute and by the health team. A descriptive method was adopted from a qualitative approach. The study population consisted of 15 outpatients of the Psychiatric Institute at the University of São Paulo Medical School Hospital das Clínicas. Data were obtained through observation and interviews, fully observing rules about research involving human beings as stated in Resolution 196/96. The following categories emerged during data analysis: Arriving in search of help; Making appointments; Waiting for the appointment; Experiencing the consultation; Expressing the experience of communication with health professionals; Evaluating outpatient assistance. We concluded that most of the clients are satisfied with the communication established with the professionals, with some exceptions. Although these are few, they deserve our attention for everybody to receive quality care.
