Classroom communication is a broad and complex process, which starts at the first pedagogical contacts between teacher and student, although not always in a fulfilling way. This descriptive study aimed to identify the meaning of the word work as it is used by the senior students of an undergraduate nursing course, with a view to introducing the subject Nursing in Occupational Health. A questionnaire was used as a means of collecting data and results were analyzed and discussed in the theoretical framework of Mielnik (1976). The students’ opinions about the issue highlighted the positive aspects of work, which is related to doing, constructing and developing activities concerning citizenship. Other students reported aspects of survival and stress generated by work, although, in their opinion, these aspects must be balanced. Knowing the expression of the students’ ideas and feelings as well as their individuality has contributed to an effective dialogue in the teacher-student relation and to the construction of knowledge. Further studies about the issue are suggested with a view to indicating new reflections.
