This pilot study aims to apply the integrative literature analysis model as proposed by Ganong and based on the question "how is the elderly’s communication understood". The definition of the sample for analysis represents 30.7% of the 131 research studies selected according to the inclusion criteria, based on the key words communication and aging, identified in Medline, Cinahl, Lilacs and Dedalus from 1994 to 2000. Results showed descriptive literature analyses and empirical analyses with elderly people, concerning barriers in communication among nurses and elderly surgical patients; functional and emotional implications in communication of elderly people with visual loss and the importance of support services, apart from the self-perception of the elderly about aging, the elderly’s roles and family relations. This pilot study confirms the viability of the "integrative analysis" according to a script adapted for the study.

Keywords : interaction; communication; elderly; aging.
