Communication is the basis of relationships among human beings, which requires nurses to be well prepared for it. Particularly in emergency situations, communication is hindered due to the very worrisome conditions for those involved: the nurse, the patient and the family. This study aimed to survey the publications produced after 1990 concerning communication between the nurse, the family and the critical patient. Hence, it is a bibliographic research. Data were obtained by consulting the following journals: Revista Latino Americana de Enfermagem, SIBRACEN Proceedings, Revista Brasileira de Enfermagem of São Paulo University, Acta Paulista de Enfermagem published from 1990 onwards. Twelve articles were found, 7 of which (58.33%) addressed communication between nurses and critical patient, 3 (25.00%) dealt with the relationship with family and 2 (16.67%) were related to the relationships between critical patient and family. Article analysis demonstrated the need to implement actions so as to refine the communication between nurse and patient, as well as the systematization of guidelines with a view to meeting the needs of relatives in this situation and effective communication in this triangle.
