The object of this study is communication as a form of nursing care for mothers of interned children; research is guided by the question of why nurses, in their daily care practice, are "not" used to communicating and/or orienting the children’s mothers, in view of the knowledge that communication is a basic instrument for nursing care. The study aimed to characterize the elements used in nursing orientation/communication that tranquilize or stress the mothers of interned children, as well as to analyze communication elements as nursing care. A qualitative approach was used. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews. It was concluded that nurses merely use observation and discourse for communication, but do not communicate in a therapeutic way, so as to decrease the stress, anxiety and affliction felt by the mothers of interned children.
