This study is an experience report at a unit of patients in serious conditions of a Public Hospital in Rio de Janeiro. The authors, who are nursing students, experienced the process of a client’s death and care for the body after death. This created many conflicts, doubts, positive and negative emotions, loaded with reflections on care and nursing. Machado, Figueiredo (1999) and Kübler-Ross (1997) were used as a theoretical framework.

Keywords : nursing; death; care.
