This study aimed to understand the nursing identity construction process, focusing on the characterization of his or her role. A qualitative approach is adopted, seeking to privilege the understanding of meanings and the relations between individuals in a given structure. The social, cultural and historical roles of the nurse showed to acquire locally constituted meanings in daily working practice, in mediating each individual and his/her respective task and at the interface of different staff members’ roles.
