This study presents the results of the research " Youth and Adult Education: the significance of literacy for older people", resulting from the identification of problems that illiteracy found in different social segments, including the elderly, constitutes a major challenge society in which we live. The objective of this investigation was to assess the impact on personal and social context, of the process of literacy for older people. The field research was conducted in five institutions in São Paulo, from a qualitative approach, with the use of questionnaires and interviews with older students and their teachers. The interviews were based on pre-defined script containing questions relating to the identification of individuals and the meanings they attach to the school experience. The results confirm the initial hypothesis that literacy promotes significant changes in the lives of older people, enabling them to participate more actively in society with a critical view of reality, and to expand their sociability and strengthen friendly relations. Literacy as an essential part of the educational process, include the group of  the fundamental rights of all humans, and to include the elderly, enables the exercise of citizenship and its place in contemporary literate society.
