The title of this essay is inspired in a book written by Klaus Mollenhauer, one of the international references in social pedagogy. In the book "Vergessene Zusammenhänge: Über Kultur uns Erziehung" (Forgotten Connections: on Culture and Education) the author argues that all education implies, on one hand, expansion and enrichment, and, on the other hand, narrowing and impoverishment. By having turned itself into a disciplinary field of its own, pedagogy tends to forget that education is linked to the social system, to the ways of life developed by given cultures and by the economic and political organization of society.  Pedagogy could contribute by inserting more strongly its problematizations within the social and cultural context. Based on this presupposition, and in dialogue with Mollenhauer and other authors, I attempt to identify some requirements for a social pedagogy in Latin America: society as a field of pedagogical action; popular education as a theoretical-methodological perspective; professional-technical education based on an inquiring attitude about the social and cultural reality of persons and groups.

Keywords : social pedagogy; popular education; educational theory; Klaus Mollenhauer.
