The present work is to give an overview over current on the practices, spaces, projects and programs to encourage reading in prisons in different regions of Brazil. Considering Education in its most comprehensive, access, training and encouragement from readers become the right of those who temporarily lose their freedom, a right to systematically violated by the emerging politics of education in the prisons of the country, still in consolidation phase through the National Plan for Education in Penal Establishments, which states that all Brazilian states and Federal District shall prepare and implement their State Plans. In this work originates from research conducted for the Ministry of Education of Brazil in partnership with the Organization of American States for Education Science and Culture, will seek to demonstrate, with data and information in situ, aspects that affect the possibility that the developing the habit reader is made ​​possible by educational and cultural activities promoted within Brazilian prisons, as the skills developed through the reading habit acquire, for the prisoners, outlines specifically important in relation to their training, family contact, communication general with the outside world and the exercise of those rights not affected by the judgment of conviction
