Social Education, Non-formal Education, and Community Education have several aspects in common. One of those is a vast variety of the ways in which these concepts are understood and used in the field of socio-educational work. In our article, we take this conceptual broadness as a starting point in order to develop an analysis on the shared elements and merging borderlines. It is suggested that an only possibility to start establishing productive dialogues between Social Education, Non-formal Education and Community Education is to take the existence of different "sub-traditions" of socio-educational approaches as a starting point. The main objective of the paper is to suggest, with social pedagogy as the theoretical framework, one possibility for opening up the horizons to dialogues as well as to joint objectives and shared tasks. The analyses of the article are based on literary analysis as well as on the considerations and findings of our Doctor's Thesis (RYYNÄNEN 2011) the fieldwork of which was conducted in three Non-governmental Organisations in the city of Salvador, Brazil, in 2008 and 2009.
