Many things have happened in the professional field and in the discipline of sociocultural animation in Spain since the mid-50's last century, when Mary Salas began to use, in their work with women in low income neighborhoods in the outskirts of Madrid, the term "sociocultural animation". The animation came with great force in my country and it looked like it could be the magic bullet for many of the situations of poverty, rootlessness, lack of formation, enforcement and, in general, lack of resources that suffered our communities living at that time, postwar period. Ander-Egg (1989) would used a few years later, the term "pananimacionismo" to collect those initial expectations according to which the animation was being in everything and solve everything in the social and cultural development. Today the reality of the ASC in my country is very different. The socio-cultural programs have to live and often to compete with many other programs, methodologies and professionals who are working in the field of sociocultural. There are two objectives that guide this paper. First, show, in a rapid state, the current situation of the ASC in Spain. Second, build the theoretical edifice which, in my view, supports and guides the activities, programs and projects of ASC. To do this I will frame the ASC in a whole set of terms, concepts and methodologies that currently refer to community sociocultural processes in the world. Finally, I will spend the two last sectios of that paper characterizing the processes of ASC; the content and methodologies that it convey; the dimensions that it shapes and the values ​​that support and encourage it.
