Worldwide, the STI is gaining increased importance for the evaluation of intelligibility in public places. Often, the STI already is part of the requirements in the solicitation for the construction of a new building. If a minimum stipulated STI value cannot be reached after finishing the construction, the building contractor has to rectify the problem, otherwise he is held liable and subject to contractual penalties. For this reason, the STI is already simulated in the planning phase and later verified by measurements on site. This article tries to present the fundamental concepts of the STI and the techniques and signal processing to obtain it. Some theoretical and practical examples are shown and some weak points of the STI revealed.
