This paper presents a brief analytical sketch of the controversy about the class identification between work and Social Work, to contribute to answer the intriguing question: Social Work is (or not) a work? For this, it works from the perspective of historical and dialectical materialism of Marx, opting for the ontological tradition of Marx and Lukács, with the dialogue of Ricardo Antunes. This is an ongoing study that will culminate in a doctoral thesis in the Course of Social Work from the Universidade Estadual Paulista UNESP, Franca.
