The objective of this research was to investigate the accidents and occupational diseases in the footwear industry of Franca/SP. For this qualitative study 20 injured workers were interviewed. Results showed that working has been a source of hazards to the workers' physical and mental health which is related to the working organization. The violence experienced by workers is not related to the accident itself and the circumstances in which it happened, but extended through a long treatment process followed by the institutional path which must be followed in order to establish a connection between the accident and/or illness to the work.
