The present work discusses the work conditions of the garbage pickers who live in Itapema - SC. The main focus of this project was the garbage pickers who practice their activity on the streets of that town. The analysis of the subject is justified since this kind of occupation is very common in our country. One of the goals of this article is to discuss this category as workers who find in this profession a way to survive, once they are marginalized and not socially recognized. This research used semi-structured interviews and active observation of their work processes. The observed garbage pickers daily live the precarious conditions of working and the fragility of the social supports. The present study problematizes the idea of the working relations established by the pickers, and its constitution as a work force inserted in a society oriented by capitalism.
