The goal of this study was to identify aspects of the living conditions and work of the female sugar cane cutters. METHOD: an exploratory descriptive study, a qualitative approach to the use of oral history as a research method and content analysis for speeches. We interviewed ten sugar cane cutters in 2011. RESULT: most were brown-skinned or black, come from other states of Brazil, married and having children. After analyzing the speeches, we identified two categories: Pregnancy and Work and Family Relationships and in the Workplace. Even pregnant women having aches and pains worked until they could bear, because their wages were based on productivity, the right to rest after delivery were not respected by the employer. Some marriage relationships were aggressive and violent, however, the work environment was considered good because they were respected and had friends. CONCLUSION: multidisciplinary strategies of care for these workers are essential.
