Abstract

BATISTA, Eraldo Leme and ANDRADE, Cristiane Batista. No centro do debate: a saúde e o trabalho de professores. The aim of this essay is to discuss the changes in the world of work and the education policies in the last decades, and their influences on teachers' health and working conditions. Literature on work organization in the capitalist system, neoliberal policies, and teaching is examined. Productions centered on elementary school teachers' health dealing with stress, burnout, and health conditions are also taken into consideration. Therefore, the scenario is that teachers in general have been deeply affected by their working conditions: low salaries, sick leave due to work-related illness (breakdown, RSI/WMSD, suffering, vocal cords problems), intention of leaving their job. On the other hand, there is evidence of permanence at work: desire to continue teaching, the pursuit of autonomy, plan to educate future generations. This is an interesting and complex field for further research.

Keywords : teaching; working conditions; health.
