This research addresses the rise of private military companies in the post-Cold War scenario and its particular role in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, where these new transnational actors gained greater international relevance. The main objective of this article is to situate these corporate entities in the contemporary international relations debate, discussing their role, influence and consequences for the field of international security. The central idea for this study is that the privatization of force introduces market dynamics in the decision-making process on security issues and institutions. Also, in the theory field, some key concepts such as the state monopoly on violence and the separation of public and private domain are relativized. The recent experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq foster this discussion by providing the empirical substrate on the effects and implications of military companies in international relations, especially over the last two decades for a new post-Cold war international scenario.
