In order to understand the indigenous peoples as actors of global politics, I assess their nature as political actors, by approaching concepts such as ethnic groups, nations and communities. I also discuss the nature of the transnational indigenous movement and of the non-governmental organizations that promote indigenous interests. While approaching the transnational indigenous movement, I observe that the field of historical action where the movement operates is the globalization, for which the indigenous actors have a counter-hegemonic proposal, of a communitarian background. At the same time, the very global governance dynamics bring about a prominence of the indigenous peoples when emphasizing the participation of stakeholders and local structures. In various ways, I conclude, the indigenous peoples have a growing presence in certain sectors of global governance.
