Abstract

SALLES, Marcus Maurer de. Uma agente internacional iminternacional im"BRIC"ada: os novos caminhos e desafios da política externa brasileira no século XXI. In Proceedings of the 3rd ENABRI 2011 3° Encontro Nacional ABRI 2011, 2011, São Paulo (SP, Brazil) [online]. 2011 [cited 09 October 2024]. The present essay sustains that Brazilian foreign policy, during the first decade of the 21st century, is more than ever, im"BRIC"ated. That stands for more than just a simple play on words. It means that the complexity of the interaction - either converging or diverging - the various actions of an international agenda of an emerging country such as Brazil, is progressively becoming more latent. This becomes clear throughout the analysis of three major priorities of the Brazilian international agenda: the quest for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council, the leadership of South-South alliances and coalitions, and the priority of South-American integration. To realize that all these foreign policy fronts are im"BRIC"ated is an urging awareness for Brazil. Otherwise, it will not be able to recongnize the naturalness of the tensions and contradictions within an international agenda of any country that aims some level of international protagonism. Once this naturalness is comprehended, it will be up to Brazil to decide whether it will assume this role or not, with all the consequences - such positive as negative - that result from this decision.

Keywords : Brazil; BRICs; Foreign Policy; Multilateralism; South America.
